barbados
Savour the flavours of Barbados
As the island’s official tourism guide states, “each place in Barbados has a story, every meal is a celebration, and each day promises new experiences, discoveries and memories to last a lifetime”.
It’s a pretty accurate summary of this wonderful Caribbean paradise, a place that so many visitors fall in love with, returning time and again – and in some cases making their homes or second homes here.
Balmy year-round temperatures, fabulous beaches, friendly people and the best dining in the Caribbean all contribute to its attraction, and for such a small island, there’s so much to do – even though it’s also the perfect place to not do very much!
So whether you enjoy sporty pursuits, historical attractions, natural beauty, shopping experiences, party fun or just relaxing with a book under a palm tree, Barbados has it all – and then some.
You’ll never be far from a beautiful white-sand beach, as the coral island has more than 80, all lapped by crystal-clear waters and backed by palm trees but each with its own appeal. Depending where you are, you can hire a boat, try your hand at spearfishing, swim with turtles, dive into an exciting water sport, surf, sun bathe or picnic under a shady tree.
The beaches are great everywhere but the sand is especially pure on the west coast, where the nickname ‘Platinum Coast’ also fits with its laid-back glamour, high-end accommodation and fine dining.
This is the quieter, more exclusive area of the island, and the historic city of Holetown is its heart, with designer shopping (head for Limegrove Lifestyle Centre), wonderful restaurants, vibrant nightlife and cultural attractions.
If you prefer more of a party atmosphere then the island’s lively south coast is the place to go, with lots of fun-loving bars (karaoke anyone?) and cheery restaurants – the famous Friday night fish fry at Oistins Bay Gardens is an absolute must when visiting the island.
With more than 1,500 rum shops, you should definitely pick up some of the local tipple too, although nothing compares to sipping it in the evening sunshine right here – another one of those one-off Bajan experiences you’ll want to keep repeating.
